START YOUR NEW YEAR WITH WELLNESS
A Tea and Tradition Journey
As the new year begins, I find myself drawn to the comforting ritual of tea. For me, tea has always been more than just a drink—it’s a connection to my roots, a soothing presence, and a reminder of how simple practices can nurture mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
Growing up in Jamaica, tea was an everyday staple, but we didn’t call it “tea.” We called it bush tea—a term that captures the essence of our traditional herbal infusions. Each cup had its purpose, steeped with nature’s gifts and brewed for its unique benefits.
A Tea for Every Moment
Every herb had its time and purpose, offering its own kind of care:
Cerasee (Momordica charantia): A bitter tea brewed as a detoxifier, especially before the start of the school year.
Peppermint (Mentha spp.): A go-to remedy for colds, stomachaches, and moments of discomfort.
Soursop Leaves (Annona muricata): A calming tea for restful sleep, cherished for its soothing properties.
Moringa (Moringa oleifera): Brewed for its energy-boosting and nutrient-packed qualities.
Each herb was brewed for its own specific benefit. Even our cocoa tea, a Saturday morning treat enjoyed during early market trips—was steeped with purpose, offering a rich, comforting start to the day.
The Ritual of Cocoa Tea
Saturday mornings at the market were a unique kind of magic. The air was crisp and filled with the sounds of vendors setting up their stalls. And while the mission for most was to grab the freshest produce, for me, it was all about the cocoa tea.
Sold from a wooden cart bouncing down the market lane, somehow defying gravity without spilling a single drop, this spiced hot chocolate was my reason to rise before the sun. It came steaming hot, paired with fried fish and fry-over dumpling, and spiced with ground cinnamon and nutmeg.
The warmth of the tea, the richness of the cocoa, and the spices that lingered on my tongue made it worth every sleepy step. That simple cup, handed over with a smile, felt like a hug in a mug—comforting, fortifying, and grounding.
Tea Cultures Across the World
Tea is a universal experience, deeply rooted in cultures around the globe. At our January 25 event, we’ll be delving into tea traditions from every corner of the world, exploring how these timeless practices promote wellness. Here are a few:
Yerba Mate (Argentina): Known as the “drink of friendship,” this energizing tea, rich in matteine (a caffeine-like compound), is shared communally, fostering social connection and mental clarity.
Masala Chai (India): A warming blend of black tea, spices like cardamom and ginger, and milk, this tea embodies balance and is celebrated for its digestive benefits.
Sencha (Japan): A green tea rich in antioxidants, Sencha is an integral part of Japanese tea culture, symbolizing mindfulness and respect.
Rooibos (South Africa): Naturally caffeine-free and high in antioxidants, this earthy tea is a staple for relaxation and immune support.
These traditions remind us that tea is more than a drink—it’s a pathway to whole wellness, offering mental clarity, emotional warmth, and physical vitality.
Tea as Tradition and Care
In Jamaica, tea wasn’t just a beverage; it was a healing ritual tailored to every need:
Health and Healing: Tea was our medicine cabinet, ready to ease colds, menstrual discomfort, or upset stomachs.
Preparation: Before heavy meals or after fasting, teas prevented discomfort and prepared our bodies.
Rest and Restoration: Soursop tea was brewed nightly to encourage deep, restorative sleep.
Even now, I carry these practices with me. A cup of soursop tea before bed helps me unwind, while a sprinkle of moringa powder in the morning energizes me for the day ahead.
