ABOUT BACKYAAD BOTANIST

Welcome! I’m the creative mind behind Backyaad Botanist, a space dedicated to reconnecting people with nature through gardening, horticulture, and plant therapy. Based in Raleigh, NC, I specialize in cultivating specialty wellness-focused gardens and hosting hands-on workshops that explore the intersection of horticulture and holistic healing.

With a deep appreciation for culture and tradition, I incorporate native and therapeutic plants into all my projects—helping others uncover the joy of creating their own green spaces. My approach blends practical gardening tips, sustainable practices, and the emotional and physical benefits of plants to foster well-being.

Through my professional and digital presence, I strive to inspire a community that values wellness, creativity, and connection—whether it’s through planting a seed or cultivating a moment of calm.

Feel free to connect with me on Instagram, join the Facebook Group, or join our worshops, “Garden Parties”, for tips to create your own plant oasis.

ORIGIN

I was born in Jamaica, where plants were more than just a backdrop—they were survival, culture, and connection. My Saturdays were spent on my grandmother’s farm, where I learned that the land holds stories, traditions, and the power to heal. But like many, life pulled me in different directions before bringing me back to my roots.

After moving to Raleigh, NC, I found myself on a winding path through engineering, physics, and technology. I worked in startups, engineering firms, and software, gaining skills but never quite feeling at home. Something was always missing. Eventually, I listened to that inner pull, left the corporate world behind, and launched BackYaad Botanist—a space dedicated to healing, heritage, and horticulture.

As a Certified Therapeutic Horticulturist, I specialize in working with displaced people—those who have had to leave behind homes, histories, and identities, whether by force or by choice. Displacement leaves invisible wounds, and I’ve seen firsthand how reconnecting with plants, nature, and shared traditions can help in the process of healing. Through garden parties, gatherings, and immersive horticulture experiences, I create spaces where people can reclaim their sense of belonging—one plant, one lesson, one conversation at a time.

At BackYaad Botanist, we don’t just talk about plants; we talk about people. Every session is rooted in wellness, heritage, and hands-on horticulture, blending the science of growing with the art of storytelling, connection, and self-discovery.

Whether you're looking to heal, learn, or simply vibe in a space that feels like home, you’re welcome here.
